Senior Ruben Gimenez Takes NCAA Men's 50 Free Crown To Highlight Day One Of Division II National Championship Meet
UB Swimmers Bring Home Three Individual All-America Honors Plus Earn All-American Status In Men's 200 Medley Relay
Indianapolis, Indiana.-The University of Bridgeport men's and women's swimming teams got off to fine starts at the 2015 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving National Championship Meet being held in Indianapolis, Indiana on Wednesday night, as the Purple Knights brought home All-American honors in three individual event plus one relay competition.
Highlighting the Day One of the NCAAs for the Purple Knights was senior Ruben Gimenez (Burgos, Spain) adding another NCAA individual title to his impressive resume, as he took first place in the men's 50-yard Freestyle in a time of 19.67. Last year, Gimenez won NCAA titles in the 100-yard Free and the 100-yard Breaststroke.
Also earning individual All-American honors for the UB on Wednesday was junior Ivan Capan (Zagreb, Croatia) who took eighth place in the 200-yard IM in a time of 1:50.02 in the championship final. Teammate sophomore Antonio Nunez (Oviedo, Spain) earned Honorable Mention All-American honors with an eleventh place finish taking third place in the consolation final in a time of 1:48.80.
On the women's side, sophomore Tatiana Shepel (Moscow, Russia) took home All-America honors for the second straight season, as she finished seventh in the 50-yard Freestyle in a time of 23.36.
The Purple Knights wrap up the day on a high note as the men's 200-yard Medley Relay team of Didac Matsuyama, Gimenez, Capan and Vladislav Paskas grabbed All-America honors with a fifth place finish in a time of 1:27.81.
As a team, the Bridgeport men sit in sixth place out of 24 scoring team with 65 points, and the UB women are in 20th place out of 25 scoring teams with 12 points.
Action at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving National Championship Meet continues through Saturday evening.
