UB Men Move Up To Fourth Place As A Team; UB Women In Eighth After Day Three At NCAA Championship Meet
Geneva, Ohio-It was a history making Friday night on day three of the 2014 NCAA Division II Men's & Women's National Championship Swimming & Diving Meet being held in Geneva, Ohio just outside of Cleveland for the University of Bridgeport program, as senior Oscar Pereiro (Arzua, Spain) became only the third swimmer in win the national title the NCAA Division II men's 100-Yard Backstroke for four straight years, and junior Ruben Gimenez (Burgos, Spain), also won a national title capturing first place in the men's 100-Yard Breaststroke.
Pereiro wan the 100 Back in a time of 47.37 giving him his fourth straight national crown in that event. He joins Mark Doyle of Oakland University (1978, 79, 80, 81) and Rodrigo Ferreira of North Dakota (2004, 05, 06, 07) as four-time national champions in the NCAA Division II Men's 100-Yard Backstroke.
Gimenez won the 100 Breaststroke in a school record time of 52.73.
As a team, the UB men moved up to fourth place with 209.5 points, and the Bridgeport women sit in eighth place with 128 points. Drury leads both the men's (406.5 points) and women's (358 points) team standings.
Along with the two national titles won on Friday, several more Purple Knights turned in All-American swims.
Junior Ivan Sangines (Barcelona, Spain) earned All-American honors in the men's 500-yard Freestyle taking fourth place in a school record time of 4:25.95.
Freshman Antonio Nunez (Oviedo, Spain) took second place in the men's 200-Yard Butterfly with an All-American and school record time of 1:47.15.
The Bridgeport women's 800-Yard Freestyle Relay Team of junior Adeline Martin (Antibes, France), senior Armony Dumur (Amiens, France), sophomore Tatiana Shepel (Moscow, Russia) and freshman Polina Melinikova (Moscow, Russia) set a school record and captured All-American accolades taking seventh place in a time of 7:28.41.
Earning Honorable Mention All-American honors on Friday were Armony Dumur who set a school record in the women's 200-Yard Butterfly taking ninth place in a time of 2:02.21, senior Vyacheslav Fattakhov (Almatt, Kazakhstan) took tenth in the men's 100-Yard Breaststroke and the men's 1880-yard Freestyle Relay Team finished in twelfth place.
