Swim Teams Open 2013-14 Season With Sweep At Queens (N.Y.) College
Men Top QC, 115-89, And Women Prevail, 89-82
Flushing, N.Y-Men's senior co-captain Oscar Pereiro and first-year women's transfer Adeline Martin, earned the first NCAA "B" standards for the University of Bridgeport swimming teams, in the 100-yard Backstroke (55.55) & 500-yard Freestyle (5:07.38) respectively, at Queens College in the Purple Knights dual meet season opener on Friday afternoon. The UB men topped QC, 115-89, and the Bridgeport women were victorious, 89-82.
Both swimmer were also double individual winners on the afternoon, with Martin taking the 200-yard IM (2:10.18) and Pereiro capturing the 50-yard Freestyle (21.13) plus they were on their teams' first place 200-yard Medley Relay. The other double winner for the women was sophomore Elena Shchekleina in the 50-yard Freestyle (25.47) & 100-yard Butterfly (59.40); while the Bridgeport men had two others double up on the day in senior Slavik Fattakhov eho won the 200-yard IM (1:57.45) and 100-yard Breststroke (57.42) and first-year transfer Didac Matsuyama who won the 200-yard (1:43.03) and 500-yard (4:46.18) Freestyles.
With the Purple Knights only losing one race in which they had an entry, there were plenty of individual winners as well. Sophomore Sara Savovic (12:03.94) and first-year transfer Ivan Sangines (9:58.55) won the 1000-yard Freestyles; Senior Ilka Oberle (57.37) and junior Vlad Paskas (48.21) took first in the 100-yard Freestyles; Sophomore Claudia Esteban won the 100-yard Backstroke (1:01.97) and freshman Diego Marques captured the 100-yard Butterfly (51.91).
In honor of the month of October being women's breast cancer awareness month, the Purple Knights wore pl us provided Queens College with pink caps for the swimmers to wear during Friday's meet. When the UB women's swimming team heads north to Worcester, Mass. for their dual meet with Assumption College at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, both teams will also don the pink caps to support research and a cure for ALL cancers.
The Bridgeport men return to the water next Saturday when they host the College of St. Rose in a dual meet with the UB women.
