Rookies Adeline Martin And Didac Matsuyama Crowned 2013 UB Swimming Pentathlon Champions
Teams Open The Regular Season Next Friday At Queens (NY) College
Bridgeport, Conn. – The University of Bridgeport swimming teams held the women's tenth and men's fifth Annual Pentathlon Friday afternoon at the Wheeler Recreation Center Natatorium. It didn't take long for the fledgling Purple Knights to make their presence known as first-year swimmers Adeline Martin (Antibes, France) and Didac Matsuyama (Barcelona, Spain) were crowned Champions in the women's and men's events. The swimmers competed in five timed events – 100-meter Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle and a 200-meter Individual Medley. Individual event winners are recognized, including Event Records, as well as honoring the Pentathlon Champion, the swimmer with the lowest total time for all five events.
There was a total of seven individual event records set, as well as the women's total time record. Martin had the biggest impact on the "Record Assault" taking four of five women's records – 100-meter Butterfly (1:05.91), Breaststroke (1:14.23), Freestyle (59.31) & 200-meter IM (2:22.55). With those times, coupled with a second place in the Backstroke (1:08.59), it's no surprise Martin lowered the total time record by almost :07 seconds (6:50.59). Sophomore Jaimy Lee Taskin (Noordwijkerhout, Holland) was the other individual event champion in the 100-meter Backstroke (1:06.77). Taskin also finished second in the total time race (7:10.00) with fellow sophomore Elena Shchekleina (Yekaterinburg, Russia) two seconds behind for third (7:12.02)
On the men's side Matsuyama grabbed the men's total time title (6:09.51) by setting the record in the 200-meter IM (2:09.25) and finishing no worse than fourth in any event. There were two other individual event records broken; Junior Ruben Gimenez (Burgos, Spain) reset his 100-meter Breaststroke mark and senior defending NCAA Champion Oscar Pereiro (Arzua, Spain) took down the 100-meter Butterfly (55.60) record as well as winning the 100-meter Backstroke (56.97) and Freestyle (51.79) on his way to finishing third in total time (6:11.08). Sophomore transfer Ivan Capan (Zagreb, Croatia) showed solid versatility finishing no lower than fourth in any event and squeezed in to take second place (6:10.62).
