Purple Knights Open Strong On Day One Of 2013 NCAA Division II Men's Swimming Nationals
UB Sits In Seventh Place After Opening Day Of Four-Day Event
Birmingham. Alabama-The University of Bridgeport men's swimming team got off to a quick start on day one of the 2013 NCAA Division II National Championship Meet, as the Purple Knights set a pair of school records and sit in seventh place amongst the 23 teams that scored points. UB scored 61 total points on Wednesday. Drury leads the meet with 109 total points on day one of the four-day event.
Juniors Ruben Gimenez (Burgos, Spain) and Oscar Pereiro (Arzua, Spain) earned All-American honors in the 50-yard Freestyle, as Gimenez took third place (19.95) and Pereiro finished sixth (20.04). In the morning prelims, Gimenez turned in a school record time of 19.91.
The Purple Knights closed Wednesday on high note setting a school record as they finished in third place in the 200-yard Medley Relay in a time of 1:27.82 after barley squeaking into the championship final with the eighth fastest time in the prelims. Senior Artur Pietrzak (Lezno, Poland) plus graduate student Krzysztof Wilk (Krakow, Poland) teamed with Gimenez and Pereiro on the All-American 200-yard Medley Relay team.
Action at NCAA Division II Men's Swimming National Championship Meet continues through Saturday night as part of the 2013 NCAA D II Winter Sports Festival in Birmingham, Alabama.
