Purple Knights Win NCAA Division II Men's 200-yard Medley Relay For Second Consecutive Season
Quartet Of Oscar Pereiro, Ruben Gimenez, Ilkka Hanhineva and Krzysztof Wilk Win National Title In Time of 1:28.38
Mansfield, Texas-The University of Bridgeport men's swimming team got off to a fine start on day one the 2012 NCAA Division II National Championship being hosted by Henderson State University in Mansfield, Texas at the Mansfield I.S.D. Natatorium, as 200-yard Medley Relay team of sophomore, team captain Oscar Pereiro (Arzua, Spain), Ruben Gimenez (So., Burgos, Spain) junior Ilkka Hanhineva (Pietarsaari, Finland) and junior Krzysztof Wilk (Warsaw, Poland) captured a national championship with a time of 1:28.38, and Pereiro also earned individual All-American honors in the 50-yard Freestyle.
This is the second straight year that the Purple Knights have won the NCAA Division II 200-yard Medley Relay, and the win marks the third relay national title the Purple Knights have captured in the last two years.
Pereiro finished in sixth place in the 50-yard Free with a time of 20:15 (new UB record). Teammate Gimenez finished in fifth place in the consolation final in the same event with a time of 20:54 which was good for thirteenth place overall.
As a team, UB sits in seventh place with a total of 57 points after day one at the NCAAs. UC San Diego leads the men's standings with 100 total points
Action at 2012 NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships continues through Saturday night.
