Swim Teams End Fall Semester With Sweep Of Post University
Oscar Pereiro Sets Two Spanish Provincial Records
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's and women's swimming teams wrapped up the 2011 Fall semester in fine fashion handing upstart Post University dual meet losses. The UB women came out on top, 48 – 38; while the men prevailed at 31 – 18.
Swimming in their home pool for the only official meet of the semester, the Purple Knights took advantage by posting some impressive swims. The women accounted for one relay and seven individual NCAA "B" qualifying times on the day; while the Men tallied an NCAA "A" standard coupled with two relay and seven individual NCAA "B" standards.
Leading the way with individual "B" standards for the women was sophomore Maria Trubitsyna (Moscow, Russia) grabbing three in the 400-meter Free (4:20.71), 50-meter Free (27.19) and 200-meter Free (2:05.68 – relay lead-off); while sophomore Anna Krasnowska (Kedzierzyn-Kozle, Poland) picked up two in the 50-meter Free (26.97) and 100-meter Free (59.08). Senior captain Maris Visse (Tallinn, Estonia), 800-meter Free (9:19.34) and sophomore Ilka Oberle (Schwanau, Germany), 200-meter Breaststroke (2:40.85) each added another. The 800-meter Free Relay of Trubitsyna, Krasnowska, Visse and Alja Tavcar (Ljublijana, Slovenia) (8:35.86) also bettered the "B" standard.
The Bridgeport men were led by sophomore Oscar Pereiro (Arzua, Spain) who achieved an NCAA "A" qualifying standard in the 100-meter Backstroke (53.66 – relay lead-off) and followed that with a "B" standard in the 100-meter Free (51.79), plus freshman Vladislav Paskas (Zrenjanin, Serbia) had two "B" standards in the 800-meter Free (8:35.29) and the 200-meter Freestyle (1:54.70 – relay lead-off). Adding another each were juniors Krzysztof Wilk (Krakow, Poland) in the 100-meter Free and Ilkka Hanhineva (Pietarsaari, Finland) in the 100-meter Butterfly; while sophomore Ruben Gimenez (Burgos, Spain) in the 50-meter Free (23.10) added another. Both men's relays grabbed NCAA "B" standards in the 400-meter Medley team of Pereiro, Gimenez, Hanhineva, Wilk (3:44.68) and the 800-meter Free combo of Paskas, Wilk, Gimenez, Igor Vulesevic (Zrenjanin, Serbia) (7:40.16).
In addition to the barrage on the NCAA Qualifying Standards by the Purple Knights, 2010 NCAA 100-yard Backstroke Champion Oscar Pereiro picked up a couple of Spanish Galician provincial records on the day. Since the competition was held in a 25-meter pool, the Spanish Swimming Federation will recognize the times achieved in an official competition for Provincial Record recognition. Results will submitted for approval in the 100-meter Backstroke (53.66) and the 50-meter Backstroke (25.14) on behalf of Pereiro.
