Men's Swimming Tops Queens In 2011-12 Season Opener
Purple Knights Defeat QC, 112.5-75.5
Flushing, NY The University of Bridgeport men's swimming team opened its 2011-12 season on Friday afternoon, as the Purple Knights defeated the Queens College Knights, 112.5-75.5, in Flushing NY.
Highlighting the first dual meet of the season were the strong performances turned in by Oscar Pereiro (Arzua, Spain), Ruben Gimenez (Burgos, Spain), Ilkka Hanhineva (Pietarsaari, Finland) and Krzysztof Wilik (Krakow, Poland) in the 200-yard Medley Relay, with an NCAA "B" qualifying cut of 1.33.06.
Sophomore Gimenez captured another NCAA "B" cut in the 100-yard Breaststroke with a winning time of 56.94; while junior Hanhineva broke the 100-yard Butterfly school record with a winning time of 50.17 and an NCAA "B" cut.
2011 NCAA champion and team captain Pereiro was a double winner in the Friday's season opener, taking first place in the 50-yard Freestyle with a time of 21.45 and the 100-yard Backstroke with a time of 53.59.
Freshman Vladislav Paskas (Zrenjanin, Serbia) got his college career off to a fine start, winning the 200-yard Freestyle (1:45.92) and 500-yard Freestyle (4:48.10).
Classmate Igor Vulesevic (Zrenjanin, Serbia) won his first race as a Purple Knight taking first in the 1000-yard Freestyle ith a time of 10:35.82
Ruben Gimenez also won two more events, breaking the school records in both the 400- yard IM (4:14.34) and 100-yard Breaststroke (56.94)
The UB men's swim team will be back in action next Saturday afternoon, November 5th, at Manhattan College.
