UB Swim Teams Wrap Up Stellar 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship Meet
Men's Team Finishes Sixth In Team Standings & Women Take 22nd Place
San Antonio, Tex.-The University of Bridgeport men's and women's swimming teams wrapped up the final night 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship Meet being held at the Palo Alto Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas with two more individual All-American performances along with and All-American showing in the men's 400-yard Freestyle Relay.
In the men's 200-yard Breaststroke, junior Piotr Safronczyk (Bialystok, Poland) earned All-American honors with a fifth place finish in a time of 1:59.71. Saturday's performances gave Safronczyk three individual 2011 All-American honors, as well as being part of three Relay All-American teams. Piotr won the 100-yard Breaststroke for the second straight year in 2011 and was part of UB's championship relay team in the 200-yard Freestyle and the 200-yard Medley.
UB sophomore Toni Valcic (Ribinica, Slovenia) earned Honorable Mention All-American honors in the 100-yard Freestyle with s 14th place finish in a time of 45.86.
The UB men's team gave a strong performance in the final event of the meet, the 400-yard Free Relay, as the Purple Knights finished in fourth place with a time of 3:00.71. Freshman Oscar Pereiro (Aruza, Spain), sophomore Toni Valcic, senior Nikola Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) and junior Piotr Safronczyk, the quartet that won national title in 200-yard Freestyle and the 200-yard Medley Relays, with another All-American performance.
On the women's side, freshman Sonia Arau (Barcelona, Spain) completed her fantastic debut season at UB by taking sixth place in the 200-yard Backstroke with a time of 2:01.38. Arau took home three individual All-American honors at the 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship Meet.
In the team standings, the UB women finished in 22nd place with 43 points, all provided by Arau.
On the men's side, the Purple Knights in only their second year at the varsity level finished in sixth place with 213 points.
