UB Men's Swimming Claims Second 2011 National Relay Title
Purple Knights Take First Place In 200-yard Freestyle Relay On Thursday Night After Claiming National Crown In 200-yard Medley Relay On Wednesday.
San Antonio, Tex.-For the second straight night, the University of Bridgeport men's swimming team won a national title in a relay event at 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship Meet being held at the Palo Alto Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas. After winning the 200-yard Medley Relay on Wednesday night, the UB quartet of sophomore Toni Valcic (Ribinica, Slovenia), freshman Oscar Pereiro (Aruza, Spain), senior Nikola Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) and junior by Piotr Safronczyk (Bialystok, Poland) took first place and a national championship in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay on Thursday evening in a time of 1:19.65. The Bridgeport men's swimming program is in only its second year at the varsity level.
To end the second night at the 2011 NCAA Division II Nationals, the same four swimmers took 14th place in the 400-yard Medley Relay with a time of 3:25.92 to earn Honorable Mention All-America accolades.
In the team standings, the Bridgeport men are in fifth place after day one at the 2011 NCAA Division II Championships with 128 points trailing first place Drury University with 127 points. The Bridgeport women's team is in 24th place with 14 points after two days at the 2011 NCAA National Championship.
Action at the 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship Meet continues through Saturday, March 12th.
