Men's Swimming Starts Season With 104-87 Dual Meet Win Over Queens
Freshman Florian Mehlan Wins Three Events
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's swimming team opened the competitive portion of its 2010-11 schedule with a 104-87 home dual meet victory of the Queens (N.Y.) College Knights on Friday afternoon.
Freshman Florian Mehlan (Moers, Germany) got his college career off to a fine start by winning three events on Friday. Florian took first place in the 200 Free with a school record and NCAA "B" cut time of 1:55.57. He won the 400 Free in a school record time of 4:12.56 and was first in the 100 Free with a time of 53.58.
2010 NCAA champion Piotr Safronczyk (SR, Bialystok, Poland) was a double winner in Friday's season opener taking first place in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:05.15 which is the fastest time turned in so far this season in NCAA Division II Men's Swimming in that event plus an NCAA "B" cut time. Piotr also won the 200 IM in a school record time of 2:12.24.
Senior Nikola Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) was also a double winner against Queens taking first in the 50 Free (24.22) and the 100 Back (1:00.94)
The UB men's swimming team will be back in action at home next Saturday afternoon when they host Manhattan College in the Wheeler Recreation Center pool. Action gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
