Dobbs Ferry, Conn.-The second-seeded University of Bridgeport men's soccer team took on the top-seeded Mercy College Mavericks for the 2019 East Coast Conference title on Saturday afternoon in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. The two teams battled to a 0-0 draw through two overtimes, but the host Mavericks claimed the 2019 ECC crown and an automatic bid to next week's NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament with a 3-1 advantage in the penalty kick shootout over the Purple Knights. The match will go down in both teams season record as a tie, so UB is 11-5-2 overall, and Mercy moves to 14-3-3.
Prior to the shootout, Mercy outshot Bridgeport, 27-9, but Purple Knights' goalkeeper Carlos Tofern (Hamburg, Germany) earned his eighth clean sheet of 2019 making nine saves, three of which came in the first overtime period to keep the match going.
Mercy's Joel Serrano made three saves for his team.
In the shootout to decide the title, Serrano made three stops to help the Mavs to the conference title.
With 11 wins this season, the UB men's soccer program has posted back-to-back double-digit win campaigns, as the Purple Knights had 10 victories in 2018.
