Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's soccer team picked up a key East Coast Conference victory on Saturday evening at Knights Field, as the Purple Knights blanked the visiting New York Tech Bears, 2-0. UB is now 6-4-0 overall and 3-1 in the ECC. NYIT slips to 5-7-0 overall and 3-1-0 in conference play. Bridgeport has won three matches in a row five of their last six outings.
The Purple Knights got one goal in each half on Saturday, as senior Leandro Avila (Panama City, Panama) head home goal number five of the season off a lovely cross from junior Vinicius Lelis (Naugatuck, Conn.) at the 24:50 mark of play.
Avila would make it a three-point night when he assisted on his team's second half insurance goal off the foot of Goncalo Mendes (Grad./Vila do Conde, Portugal) with just under 18 minutes reaming in the contest. Mendes now has three goals on the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Carlos Tofern (Hamburg, Germany) was strong in the net for UB making four saves to pick up his fourth clean sheet of the season.
Up next, the UB men's soccer team will step out of conference play on Wednesday night when the Purple Knights host local rival Southern Connecticut State University. Match time is set for 6:00 p.m.
