Amherst, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport men's soccer team snapped a four-match losing streak and a six-match losing skid with a wild 4-3 double overtime East Coast Conference road victory over the host Daemen College Wildcats on Saturday afternoon. In the contest, freshman Moritz Klein (Aachen, Germany) netted a hat trick, and classmate Abdoul Aremu (West Haven, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal with 3:25 remaining in the final overtime period. With the win, UB is now 3-8-1 overall and 2-4-1 in conference play. Daemen slips to 5-9-0 overall and 1-5-0 in the ECC.
After the hosts took and early 1-0 lead, Klein would give the Purple Knights a 2-1 lead going into halftime, as he scored on a free kick at the 31:33 and headed home a service off a corner kick from senior Jay Abreu (Sao Paulo, Brazil) just under four minutes later.
Daemen would again tie the tilt at 2-2 in the 59th minute, only to see Moritz complete his hat trick at the 61:45 mark when he headed home his fifth goal of the season to tie him for the team lead in that category with fellow freshman Jovante Etienne (Ajax, Ontario, Canada), off a free kick from sophomore Erlend Skagestad (Mjoendalen, Norway).
Once again, the host Wildcats would tie things up, this time at 3-3, when they scored with just over five minutes left in regulation.
Following a scoreless first overtime period, Aremu would net the game-winning tally, his second goal of the season, when he took a long pass off a quick restart from senior Rafael Torres (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and beat the Daemen goalkeeper with just 3:25 left to play in the final overtime session.
Purple Knights' goalkeeper, junior Juan Munoz (Bogota, Colombia) made nine saves to pick up his second victory of 2017. The host Wildcats outshot UB, 24-13, on the afternoon.
Up next, the Bridgeport men's soccer team returns home for a non-conference tilt on Tuesday afternoon when they host Wilmington (Del.) University. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Knights Field.
