Bridgeport, Conn.-A penalty kick goal with under 10 minutes to play helped lift the visiting Franklin Pierce University Ravens to a hard-fought 2-1 non-conference men's soccer victory over the host University of Bridgeport Purple Knights in UB's 2017 home opener on Saturday night at Knights Field. UB is now 1-1 overall, and Saturday's contest was the Ravens season opener.
FPU opened the scoring in the match when Oran Ben Zion put home a goal off an assist from Noam Kolakofsky at the 27:50 mark of action.
Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Purple Knights tied the game at 1-1 when sophomore Lucas Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) connected on penalty kick 3:13 into the second half after Raven's goalkeeper Jadel Poon-Lewis was called for a foul in the box.
The contest would remain deadlocked at 1-1 until the 81:14 mark of play when a UB player was call for a foul near the back touch line in the penalty box, and Franklin Pierce's Hamish Cadigan converted the ensuing spot kick and netting what proved to the game-winning goal.
Bridgeport had a chance to tie the match at 2-2 with 2:47 to play but Lucas Santos' second penalty kick of the evening, which came after the Ravens were called for a hand ball in the box, struck the crossbar and deflected away.
UB goalkeeper Daniel Coviella (Jr., Ribadesella, Spain) made five saves on the night.
Up next, the Bridgeport men's soccer team will travel to American International College on Tuesday evening for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference match in Springfield, Massachsetts.
