West Haven, Conn.-Trailing 1-0 at halftime after the host University of New Haven Chargers broke a 0-0 tie on a tally with only 1:28 to play in the first 45 minutes, the visiting University of Bridgeport Purple Knights exploded for four second half goals to post a 4-1 non-conference men's soccer win in the 2017 season opener for both teams on Thursday night.
Playing in front of a large crowd at UNH's Kayo Field, UB responded just 30 seconds into the second stanza when freshman Jovante Etienne (Ajax, Ontario Canada) capitalized on a New Haven defensive mistake to net his team's first goal of the season and tie the match at 1-1.
The Purple Knights would then grab a 2-1 lead which they never relinquished at the 52:19 mark of action when freshman Moritz Klein (Aachen, Germany) scored off a free kick.
Bridgeport would increase its lead to 3-1 just over nine minutes later when junior Andrew Quintos (Kearny, N.J.) scored off an assist from sophomore Nikolai Vadseth (Langevaag, Norway), as he buried a volley from right in front of the Chargers' goal.
Freshman Abdoul Aremu (West Haven, Conn.), playing in his hometown, finished off the second half scoring onslaught for UB when her scored off an assist from Etienne, giving Jovante three points on the evening, at the 67:56 mark.
Junior goalkeeper Daniel Coviella (Ribadesella, Spain) picked up the win in net for the Purple Knights, as he made three saves on the night. Bridgeport outshot New Haven, 19-14, on the night.
Up next, the UB men's soccer team will open its 2017 home schedule on Saturday night when the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University come to Knights Field for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
