Old Westbury, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport men's soccer team wrapped up a tough, five-match road swing with an exciting and hard-fought 2-2 double overtime tie against the host NYIT Bears on Saturday afternoon on Long Island. The tie gives the Purple Knights their first point of the 2016 season, as UB is now 0-8-1 overall and 0-2-1 in East Coast Conference play. The host Bears are now 7-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the ECC.
NYIT opened the scoring in the match with a goal in the 24th minute of play, and that is how things stood at the half with the host team holding a 1-0 advantage.
The Purple Knights tied the contest up at 1-1 at 60:21 mark when junior Jaylan White (Dix Hills, N.Y.) netted his first goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Oliver Karlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden).
The host Bears would regain the lead just over four minutes later on a score by Ben Wilson, but the pesky Purple Knights would fight back to tie the match up at 2-2 at the 78:12 mark when freshman Nikolai Vadseth (Langevaag, Norway) scored his first collegiate tally off an assist from junior Femi Coker (Johannesburg, South Africa).
NYIT had two chances to win the match hitting the crossbar as time expired in regulation and clanging a shot off the post with 1:54 remaining in the second overtime session.
The hosts outshot the Purple Knights, 29-14, on the afternoon, but UB senior goalkeeper Fabio Junior (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) made eight saves on the day.
Up next, the UB men's soccer team will open a welcomed six-match homestand, as they continue East Coast Conference play with a Wednesday evening tilt (October 12) against St. Thomas Aquinas College. Action is slated to begin at Knights Field at 6:00 p.m.
