Four UB Student-Athletes Earn Weekly East Coast Conference Honors
Markus Naglestad (Men’s Soccer), Katie Stanley and Julia Hansson (Women’s Soccer) Plus Biljana Savic (Volleyball), Earn ECC Accolades
Central Islip, N.Y.-Four University of Bridgeport student-athletes, Markus Naglestad (men's soccer), Katie Stanley (women's soccer), Julia Hansson (women's soccer) and Biljana Savic (volleyball), have been selected as weekly East Coast Conference award winners.
Naglestad, a sophomore from Kristiansand, Norway, has been selected as the ECC Men's Soccer Co-Offensive Player of the Week. He shares the award with Danny Stoker of Queens (N.Y.) College.
Last week, Markus scored four goals and added three assists to total 11 points, as he helped Bridgeport go 2-0 with wins over Wilmington and NYIT. In a 6-2 road win at Wilmington on Thursday, he netted a hat trick and dished off two assists. In a 3-0 home win over NYIT on Saturday, Naglestad scored the game-winning goal and added an assist.
Stanley, a senior from Oxon, England, has been named the East Coast Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. Katie worked her free kick magic all week, as she scored all three of her team's goals off free kicks last week as the # 1 ranked Purple Knights upped their season record to 9-0-0 and their ECC mark to 3-0-0 with a 1-0 win over Stonehill on Wednesday and a 2-0 victory over NYIT on Saturday. Her three goals on the week give Katie five goals on the season.
For the third consecutive week and the fourth time this season, Hansson, a sophomore from Tocksfors, Sweden, has earned ECC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week accolades. Julia continued her top-notch play in net for the Purple Knights so far in 2011 as she posted two clean sheets last week blanking Stonehill 1-0 and NYIT, 2-0. Hansson has now recorded five straight shutouts and a total of seven so far in 2011. Last week's two shutouts extend her scoreless streak to a total of 486 minutes and 55 seconds. Versus Stonehill, Julia made four saves, and she stopped eight shots on goal against NYIT.
Also for the third straight week and fourth time this season, Savic, a freshman from Novi Sad, Sebia, has been selected as the East Coast Conference Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week. Biljana helped Bridgeport go 2-0 last week by averaging 4.14 kills and 3,43 digs/set last week. She also contributed three assists, one service ace and three block assists on the week. Savic leads the Purple Knights with 137 total kills (3.9 kills/set) and attack percentage of .258.
