Men's Basketball Defeated in Final Seconds by Wilmington, 77-75
Purple Knights move to 2-2 in the CACC this season.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Beginning a stretch of 11 consecutive conference games, the University of Bridgeport's men's basketball team was defeated by Wilmington on Saturday by a score of 77-75. The Purple Knights' second straight two-point loss shifts their record to 7-8 this season (2-2, CACC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Leading by 13 at the break, it was a tough second half that ultimately doomed Bridgeport versus Wilmington. The Wildcats outscored UB, 45-30, across the final 20 minutes of action.
The Purple Knights led for over 38 minutes of game time until Wilmington tied the game at 72-72 with 1:30 remaining in regulation. The Wildcats then took their first lead, 75-73, with 59 ticks on the clock.
Jason Edokpayi answered for the home squad with a layup to even the contest back up at 75-75.
UB, now trailing 77-75 after a free throw with seven seconds remaining, had its final three-point attempt from Nick Traill hit off the back rim as time expired.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Speaking of Traill, the graduate guard registered an improbable double-double of 11 assists and 10 rebounds—both of which served as team highs.
Traill also added three points and three steals as he continues to rank in the top five in the CACC in takeaways per game (2.2).
Aliou Cisse served as the Purple Knights' top scorer with 18 points while Amadou Traore poured in a season-high 15 in his first start of the year. Traore also contributed eight boards and two blocks.
Edokpayi and Gabe Charleston rounded out Bridgeport's double-figure scorers with 11 points each while Caleb Jacobs led the squad with four steals.
As a team, the Purple Knights dominated the glass. Bridgeport posted a 53-34 rebounding advantage, including a 22-7 disparity in offensive boards.
Bridgeport could look back at turnovers (24) and free-throw shooting (12-of-25) as two factors in the outcome. UB's free-throw percentage was its lowest of the year.
The Purple Knights finished 30-of-74 overall from the field, including a 3-for-21 effort from long range (0-8 in the 2nd half).
