Senior D'Vonne Trumbo Becomes Only Sixth Player In Program History With 500 Career Assists As UB Tops Mercy, 100-85
Senior Day And Regular Season Finale Win Lifts Team's Overall Record To 23-3 And ECC Mark To 15-1
Bridgeport, Conn.-It was a happy Senior Day for the University of Bridgeport men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Hubbell Gym, as UB closed out its impressive 2019-20 regular season schedule with a 100-85 win over the visiting Mercy College Mavericks. UB closes out the regular season at 23-3 overall and 15-1 in the East Coast Conference. Mercy wraps up 2019-20 at 5-21 overall and 3-13 in the ECC.
The Purple Knights forced the Mavericks into a whopping 35 turnovers on the afternoon, which UB converted into 43 of its 100 points. Bridgeport was credited with a total of 24 steals on the day.
The team has scored at least 100 points six times so far this season.
Seniors Bakary Camara (Harlem, N.Y.) and D'Vonne Trumbo (Pilesgrove, N.J.) led the UB scoring parade on Saturday, as they each tailed a game-high 20 points. Trumbo made history earlier in the game, as needing three assists on the day to become only the sixth player in program history to surpass the 500-career assist plateau, he finished with a total of seven on the day. D'Vonne also led UB with six steals. Camara grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and dished off six assists for the winners.
Fellow senior Jose Pabon-Sanchez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a fine game with 15 points, four assists and three steals.
Juniors Hashem Abbas (Nablus, Palestine) with 13 points and Juan Coffi (Barcelona, Spain) with 11 points, rounded out the UB five in double-digit scoring on Saturday. Coffi also notched five steals on the afternoon.
Dayvon Cuffey led Mercy with 19 points, and teammate Bryan Griffin finished with a monster double-double of 17 points and a game-high 21 rebounds.
Up next, the UB men's basketball team will travel to Washington, D.C. and the University of the District of Columbia for next weekend's 2020 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament. Bridgeport has a bye into the semifinals on Saturday night and will play at 5:00 p.m. against the winner of the four-seed versus the number five seed game which will take place on Wednesday evening.
