Montana Mayfield's Hoop With 26 Seconds To Play Lifts UB Men's Basketball To Late Comeback Win At Queens (N.Y.)
Purple Knights Finish The Game On A 13-4 Run To Grab A Key 75-73 ECC Victory
Flushing, N.Y.-A lay-up by University of Bridgeport senior Montana Mayfield (Philadelphia, Pa.) with 26 seconds to play in regulation gave the visiting Purple Knights a 74-73 lead which they did not give up, as UB staged a furious late comeback to notch a 75-73 East Coast Conference win over the host Knights of Queens (N.Y.) College in New York City on Wednesday night. With the victory, Bridgeport is now 16-9 overall and 11-4 in conference play. UB has now won five games in a row and nine of its last 10 outings. Queens is now 12-11 overall and 9-7 in the ECC.
The visiting Purple Knights trailed by seven points, 69-62, with 4:20 to play before ending the game on a 13-4 run to grab the win.
Senior Stefano Osuji (Voorhees, N.J.) led Bridgeport in scoring with a game-high 24 points on Wednesday night. He was joined in double figures by Montana Mayfield, who scored a season0high 19 points off the bench including the game-winning hoop, and senior Kyle Benjamin (Bronx, N.Y.) who added 14 points.
Benjamin had a solid all-around game for the winners in NYC, as he recorded his fourteenth double-double of the 2016-17 season grabbing 12 rebounds to go with his 14 points. Kyle also added five assists and five blocked shots to aid the Purple Knights' cause.
Simon Green and Tyree White each scored 14 points to lead Queens on Wednesday.
Up next, the UB men's basketball team returns to the friendly confines of Hubbell Gym in the Park City for an ECC game versus Roberts Wesleyan College on Monday evening. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
