All Five Starters And A Total of Six Purple Knights Reach Double Figures As Men's Hoops Wins At Mercy
Purple Knights Top The Host Mavericks, 99-83
Valhalla, N.Y.-All five starters scored in double figures on Saturday afternoon as the University of Bridgeport men's basketball team cruised to a 99-83 East Coast Conference victory over the Mercy College Mavericks in a game played at Westchester Community College. With the win, the Purple Knights, who are now on a three-game winning streak, are 10-8 overall and 6-3 in the ECC. Mercy remains winless in conference play at 0-10, and the Mavericks are 2-16 overall.
Bridgeport junior Sam Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led all scorers on the afternoon with 18 points. He was joined in double-digit scoring by fellow starters seniors Kyle Benjamin (Bronx, N.Y.) and Stefano Osuji (Voorhees, N.J.), who each had 12 points, junior Carlos DeJesus (Bronx, N.Y.) with 11 points and sophomore D'Vonne Trumbo (Franklinville, N.J.) added 10 points.
Senior Montana Mayfield (Philadelphia, Pa.) chipped in 10 points off the Purple Knights' bench to give UB a total of six players in double figures.
Kyle Benjamin was dominant force on defense for Bridgeport on the day blocking six shots and grabbing nine rebounds to fall just shy of double-double number 12 of the year.
As a team, UB was red hot for from the floor shooting 62.3 percent from the floor connecting on 38-of-62 field goals, and the team also hit 6-of-12 three point shots (50.0%).
William Robinson led Mercy with 17 points.
Up next, the UB men's basketball team will look to continue its winning streak on Wednesday night at home when the Purple Knights host NYIT in Hubbell Gym. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
