60-Point Second Half Propels Men's Basketball To An 89-71 Home ECC Victory Over Mercy
Senior Kyle Benjamin Excels With 23 Points, Eight Rebounds and Seven Blocked Shots
Bridgeport, Conn.-leading by only two points, 29-27, at the half, the University of Bridgeport men's basketball team exploded for 60 points in the second half to pick up an 89-71 home East Coast Conference win over the visiting Mercy College Mavericks on Saturday afternoon. The victory, the Purple Knights' fourth in a row, lifts the team's overall record to 6-2, and UB is now 2-0 in conference play. Mercy falls to 1-8 overall and is 0-2 in the ECC.
Senior Kyle Benjamin (Bronx. N.Y.) was dominant at both ends of the court for Bridgeport scoring a game-high 23 points and grabbing a game-high eight rebounds, plus Benjamin had a whopping seven blocked shots on the day. Kyle hit an impressive 9-of-11 shot from the floor and was 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
Classmate Stefano Osuji (Voorhees, N.J.) joined Benjamin in double figures with 14 points for the winners, plus he chipped in five assists.
Ryan Hickey led Mercy with 13 points.
The UB men's basketball team will return to the court in one week, when the Purple Knights host the Wildcats of Daemen College in an East Coast Conference matchup. Game time in Hubbell Gym is slated for 3:00 p.m.
