Purple Knights Open The Season At 2-0 For The First Time Since The 2008-09 Campaign
Bridgeport, Conn.-Seven of the nine players that saw action for the University of Bridgeport men's basketball team on Sunday night reached double-digit scoring, as the Purple Knights picked up a 100-89 win over local rival Southern Connecticut State in the final game of the 2016 UB Men's Basketball Crossover Classic Played at Hubbell Gym. With the victory, the Purple Knights are now 2-0 to open the season for the first time since the 2008-09 season. SCSU is now 1-1 on the young season.
Senior Stefano Osuji (Voorhees, N.J.) led the UB scoring parade with 19 points.
He was joined in double figures by Rakim Lesane (Coney Island, N.Y.) with 17 points, junior Carlos DeJesus (Bronx, N.Y.) with 14 points, sophomore D'Vonne Trumbo (Franklinville, N.J.) with 12 points, and seniors Kyle Benjamin (Bronx, N.Y.) and Montana Mayfield (Philadelphia, Pa.) plus sophomore Sharif Cobb (Harlem, N.Y.), each chipped in 10 points.
Benjamin finished with his second consecutive double-double to open the 2016-17 campaign with 10 rebounds.
The Purple Knights shot the ball extremely well on Sunday connecting on 49.2 percent (31-of-63) of their shots from the floor, and they hit 50 percent of their three-point attempts going 13-of-26 from beyond the arc.
SCSU was led by Michael Mallory and Jerry Luckett Jr. who each netted 25 points.
The UB men's basketball team returns to the court next Saturday afternoon in Manchester, N.H. when the Purple Knights face Southern New Hampshire University at 1:00 p.m.
