Men's Hoops Grabs Fourth Straight Win With 79-66 ECC Triumph At Mercy
Junior Ivan Simic Leads Purple Knights With 16 Points And 15 Rebounds
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-Junior Ivan Simic (Belgrade, Serbia) led four University of Bridgeport players in double figures scoring with 16 points, and he notched a double-double grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds, as the UB men's basketball team upped its winning streak to four with a 79-66 East Coast Conference road victory over the Mercy College Mavericks on Saturday afternoon. Bridgeport never trailed on the day and led 38-30 at the half. The Purple Knights are now 7-7 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Mercy is now 1-10 overall and remains winless in the ECC at 0-3.
Simic was joined in double-digit scoring by junior JoJo Swift (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 15 points, and seniors Dion Waiters (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 12 points plus Omari Howard (Bronx, N.Y.) with 11 points. Swift also contributed five steals, and Waiters added six assists and three steals for the victors. Howard had seven rebounds and three steals on the afternoon.
Senior Lloyd Antoine (Brooklyn, N.Y.) played a fine game on defense for Bridgeport blocking five shots and grabbing four rebounds only 12 minutes played.
Mercy's Joseph Pope led all scorers in the game with 25 points, and he finished with a double-double recording 14 rebounds.
The Bridgeport men are back in action on Wednesday night, January 9 when they travel to Rockville Centre, N.Y. to continue East Coast Conference play and run their winning streak to five at Molloy College. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.
