UB Men Raise Winning Streak To Seven With 94-79 Win At St. Thomas Aquinas
Purple Knights Grab At Least A Share Of ECC Regular Season Crown And Can Take Top-Seed In ECC Championship Tournament With Win At C.W. Post On Saturday
Sparkill, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport men's basketball team never trailed in the game, as the Purple Knights upped their winning streak to seven games with a 94-79 road victory over the host St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans on Wednesday night. UB, winners of 12 of its last 13 games, is now 17-8 overall and 17-3 in East Conference play. STAC falls to 5-20 overall and 5-15 in conference action. Wednesday's win by the Purple Knights combined with a C.W. Post home loss to Queens has moved Bridgeport into sole possession of first place in the conference standings by one game over the Pioneers with one game to play. UB and CWP meet on Long Island on Saturday in the regular season finale for both teams which will be televised nationally by CBS College Sports. Saturday's winner will received the top seed in next week's East Coast Conference Championship Tournament which will be played in Bridgeport's Hubbell Gum on March 5th and 6th. Saturday's game is set for a 12 noon tip-off. If the Purple Knights win over C.W. Post they will capture the regular season title outright. If CWP wins, the two teams will end in a tie for the regular season title, but the Pioneers will receive the number one seed in the tournament by virtue of 2-1 series edge over Bridgeport.
Senior Jermaine Washington (Philadelphia, Pa.) led a balanced UB scoring attack with 19 points on Wednesday. He was joined in double figures by classmate Msoo Ikyaator (Nigeria, West Africa) with 16 points, graduate student Dave Boykin (White Plains, N.Y.) and junior Donte Mentor (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who each netted 11 points and junior Josh Martin (Philadelphia, Pa.) with 10 points.
STAC's Jason Halloway and Justin Brown led all scorers in the contest with 20 points apiece.
