Dave Boykin Reaches 1,000 Career Point Mark As UB Men Crush Queens, 98-67
Jermaine Washington Leads Bridgeport Scorers With 20 Points On The Afternoon
Bridgeport, Conn.-Graduate student Dave Boykin (White Plains, N.Y.) became the 28th player in University of Bridgeport men's basketball history to reach the 1,000 career point plateau when he hit a jump shot 5:40 to play in the first half, and senior Jermaine Washington (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored a team-leading 20 points to help the host Purple Knights to a 98-67 East Coast Conference win over the Queens (N.Y.) College Knights on Saturday afternoon. The win, UB's sixth in a row and eleventh in their last twelve outings, lifts the Purple Knights overall record to 16-8, and their conference mark to 16-3. Queens falls to 17-7 overall and 14-5 in the ECC. The victory also guarantees Bridgeport a first round bye and no worse then the two seed in the 2011 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament which the Purple Knights will host on March 6 and 7.
Boykin, who needed seven points to reach the 1,000 mark entering the game, finished with a total of 13 on the day.
Also reaching double figures for Bridgeport against Queens were senior Msoo Ikyaator (Nigeria, West Africa) with 15 points, and juniors Donte Mentor (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Eion Lewis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who netted 13 and 10 points respectively coming off the UB bench.
The Purple Knights were red-hot from the floor all day hitting 56.7 percent of their shots (38 of 67) including going 14 of 25 (56.5) from three-point range. UB shot a blistering 64.9 percent from the floor (24 of 37) in the first half to race out to a 55-27 halftime lead.
Queens' Lamonte Lans led all scorers in the game with 21 points.
Bridgeport will look to up its winning streak to seven on games Wednesday night when the Purple Knights travel to St. Thomas Aquinas. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
