Sizzling Second Half Propels Men's Basketball To An 84-60 Home Triumph Over NYIT
Five Purple Knights Reach Double-Digit Scoring
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's basketball team, trailing 34-31 at the half, opened the second half on runs of 7-0 and 15-2, as the Purple Knights would go on to notch an 84-60 home East Coast Conference victory over the New York Tech Bears on Saturday afternoon. UB outscored NYIT, 53-26, over the final 20 minutes, shooting a blistering 62.2 percent (23 of 37) from the floor.
With the win, the Purple Knights are now 9-7 overall and 9-2 in conference play. NYIT is now 6-9 overall and 4-7 in the ECC.
Graduate student Dave Boykin (White Plains, N.Y.) led five Bridgeport players in double figures with 14 points.
Juniors Donte Mentor (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Moyan Henry (Bridgeport, Conn.) scored 13 points and 12 points respectively off the Bridgeport bench. Mentor hit 5 of 7 field goals, including 3 of 5 three-point shots.
Rounding out the Bridgeport quintet in double digits were seniors Jermaine Washington (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Msoo Ikyatoor (Nigeria, West Africa), who each scored 10 points. Ikyatoor notched a double-double as he grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. On the afternoon, Bridgeport held a 49-34 advantage on the boards.
NYIT's Russell Holloway led all scored in the game with 19 points.
The Bridgeport men will look to run their winning streak to five games on Wednesday night when they travel to Queens (N.Y.) College for a key East Coast Conference contest. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
