JACKSON, N.J. – Highlighted by career win No. 400 by head coach Joe Tonelli, the University of Bridgeport's baseball team split a doubleheader at Georgian Court on Sunday. The Purple Knights and Lions ended up splitting their four-game weekend series.
GAME TWO – Bridgeport 8, Georgian Court 4 (Eight Innings)
After the Lions climbed back from a 4-0 deficit with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh, UB posted four in the eighth to ultimately clinch an extra-inning win.
Bridgeport engineered its eight runs on just five hits. The Purple Knights also walked five times.
Sophomore Tyler Pennisi led the UB offense with an RBI single in the fourth before drilling a two-run double in the eighth.
Christian Ortiz, Vin Mallon and Anthony Matturro also added RBI hits in the finale. Ortiz's double in the eighth started the Purple Knights' four-run rally.
Alex Bulger pitched well in his fourth start of the year. He earned the no-decision after allowing just two runs in his six innings of work.
UB's triumph signified the 400th for Joe Tonelli who is Bridgeport's all-time winningest coach. He earned his 200th victory at UB (also has 189 wins at Albertus Magnus) on April 21 of last year.
GAME ONE – Georgian Court 9, Bridgeport 5
The Purple Knights were unable to rebound after falling behind 4-0 in the first inning of the opener. Bridgeport trimmed the lead to 6-4 in the fourth before GCU plated three more in the bottom half of that inning.
UB's offense was highlighted by a pair of home runs from Jeremy Rodrigues and Christian Ortiz.
Rodrigues launched his 22nd career home run in the second inning (solo) while Ortiz hammered a two-run blast in the fourth.
Rodrigues also chipped in a pair of singles and three runs scored in the opener. He currently leads UB in numerous offensive categories, including batting average (.351), RBIs (22), slugging percentage (613) and on-base percentage (.438).
Anthony Armenia, meanwhile, registered two RBIs courtesy of a sac fly in the fourth inning and a run-scoring ground out in the eighth.
On the mound, sophomore Dominick Weidtman saw the most success with a pair of scoreless innings out of the bullpen. He finished with three strikeouts.
