Staten Island, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team wrapped up its three-game weekend East Coast Conference series against the College of Staten Island on Saturday afternoon in New York City with a doubleheader split against the Dolphins, as UB cruised to an 18-6 win in the opener, scoring 10 runs in the ninth inning, but CSI came back to win game two, 5-4. With the split, Bridgeport is now 19-25 overall and 8-10 in conference play. Staten Island is now 10-24 overall and 3-13 in the ECC.
It was a record-setting afternoon for UB third baseman Alex Rauso (Grad., Trumbull, Conn.), as he went 7-for-9 at the plate in the two games with seven runs batted in; those seven runs batted give him 100 for his career and the top spot on the UB career RBI list, surpassing Peter Barrows who drove in 94 during his career in Purple and White.
In game one, Rauso went 5-for-6 at the plate with 4 RBI. Sophomore Anthoy Pascale (Stony Brook, N.Y.) had three hits and drove in three, and senior Craig Leonard (Holtsville, N.Y.) had two hits and two runs batted in during the game one victory.
On the mound, Jason Burger (Grad., Orlando, Fla.) earned his third win of the season working five innings as the starter, and senior Matthew Wirz (Stamford, Conn.) picked up his fourth save of 2022 pitching the final three innings of the contest.
In the nightcap, the Purple Knights led 4-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning of the seven-inning game, but the Dolphins came back to grab the win scoring one in the fifth and two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Rauso went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs in game two, and junior Tyler Sharfetz (Fords, N.J.) knocked in Bridgeport's other run.
