Garnet Valley, Pa.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team kept its 2021 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament hopes alive late Friday afternoon, as the Purple Knights scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning to salvage a doubleheader split with the host Lincoln (Pa.) University Lions with a 10-6 extra inning win after falling in the opener, 10-4. UB is now both 11-9 overall and in conference play. Lincoln moves to 5-18 overall and 5-12 in the ECC.
To qualify for the ECC Championship Tournament, the Purple Knights need to win over the Lions in UB's regular season finale plus have Queens (N.Y.) College lose at least one of its two games against the College of Staten Island on Saturday. If Bridgeport loses to Lincoln (Pa.) on Saturday, Queens must drops both ends of its doubleheader for the Purple Knights to advance to the postseason. If UB and Queens tie with identical 12-9 conference records, QC will get the final bid in the ECC Tournament by virtue of a 2-1 head-to-head tiebreaker advantage.
On Friday, the host Lions scored two runs in the first and second innings and never trailed in the opener. Freshman Anthony Pascale (Stony Brook, N.Y.) have three hits and knocked in a run in game one, and senior Stephen Giambra (Milford, Conn.) had two safeties and an RBI.
In the nightcap, UB trailed 4-0 after three innings, but the Purple Knights would score the next 10 runs in the contests with two in the fourth and two in the sixth to send the seven-inning tilt into bonus baseball before blowing the game open with six runs in the top of the ninth on the way to the 10-6 triumph.
Graduate student Andre Marchesseault (Cheshire, Conn.) had three hits and two runs batted in for the winners in game two, and Pascale added three more hits, to give him a total of six on the day, plus another RBI.
UB sophomore Jacob Rich (Northwood, N.H.) added two hits and knocked in three to help the Bridgeport offense in game two.
Junior Justin Hafele (Shelton, Conn.) picked up the win on the mound in relief in game two to up his season record 2-1 working six innings in which he allowed only two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Saturday's series final between the two teams is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch at the Lincoln (Pa.) University Baseball Complex.
