Purple Knights Open Weekend ECC Baseball Series With Big Win Over D'Youville
UB Takes The Series Opener, 21-1
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team opened a three-game weekend East Coast Conference series against the visiting D'Youville College Saints on Friday afternoon in Seaside Park, and the Purple Knights cruised to a 21-1 victory. The Purple Knights are now both 7-6 overall and in the ECC. The Saints slip to 2-16 overall and 0-12 in conference action.
As a team, Bridgeport had 25 total hits on Friday led by senior Conall Roberts (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), who went 5-for-6 at the plate with three runs batted. Classmate Stephen Giambra (Milford, Conn.) and junior Craig Leonard (Holtsville, N.Y.), each added four hits for the Purple Knights, and sophomore Shane McCone (Milford, Conn.) chipped in three base knocks.
Freshman catcher Anthony Pascale (Stony Brook, N.Y.) had quite the day at the dish, finishing just a triple short of a cycle, going 3-for-5 with seven runs batted in. Pascale blasted his team-best, third home runs of the season on Friday, a three-run shot to left in the bottom of the first inning.
Graduate student Andre Marchesseault (Cheshire, Conn.) knocked in four runs on the day for the winners.
Senior Anthony Martino (West Sayville, N.Y.) allowed only one hit over six innings with 10 strikeouts to pick up the win on the mound and raise his season record to 3-1. Junior William Ciccone (Shelton, Conn.) pitched the final three innings of the contest to earn his second save of the season, allowing just one unearned run.
The two teams will concluded their weekend series on Saturday in the Park City with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
