Same Two Team Will Meet In Bridgeport On Saturday For A 12 Noon Doubleheader
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team was defeated by the host Mercy College Mavericks, 6-3, on Friday afternoon in the opener of a three-game, weekend East Coast Conference series. UB is now both 3-4 overall and in conference play. Mercy moves to 7-3 overall and is unbeaten, 4-0, in the ECC.
Senior Matt Rodriguez (New Milford, Conn.) and junior Ryan Donnelly (Fairfield, Conn.), each had two hits for the Purple Knights, and Rodriguez also drove in a run.
Freshman Anthony Pascale (Stony Brook, N.Y.) blasted his first collegiate home run in the game, a solo shot in the fourth inning.
Graduate student Andre Marchesseault (Cheshire, Conn.) has Bridgeport's other RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Junior Matthew Wirz (Stamford, Conn.) was simply outstanding coming out of the Purple Knights' bullpen in relief of starter Anthony Martino (West Sayville, N.Y.), who took his first loss of 2021, as Wirz worked 4.1 innings of hitless and scoreless ball with four strikeouts and only one walk.
The same two teams will close out the three-game series with a 12 noon doubleheader in Bridgeport on Saturday.
