Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team picked up a key East Coast Conference sweep in a damp and chilly Sunday afternoon in Seaside Park, as the Purple Knights closed out their 2019 home schedule by defeating the Molloy College Lions on Senior Day, 7-1 in game one and 10-3 in the nightcap. UB is now 16-26 overall and 12-12 in the ECC. Molloy is now 13-26 overall and 10-14 in conference play.
In the opener, senior Chris Martucci (Ridgefield, N.J.) picked up the win working a nine-inning complete game in which he allowed seven hits, no earned runs and struck out 10 with only one walk.
On offense in game one, freshman Ryan Donnelly (Fairfield, Conn.) went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI, and sophomore Patrick Palmer (Ansonia, Conn.) also knocked in two runs.
In game two, the Purple Knights trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the home team erupted for seven runs in the seventh and scored three more in the eighth to come away with the 10-3 victory.
Sophomore Conall Roberts (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) put Bridgeport ahead to stay with a two-run single in the seventh. Senior Eamon Catherina (Ridgefield, N.J.) also had two runs batted in the nightcap.
Sophomore Vincent DeRubeis (Trumbull, Conn.) and freshman Christian DeJarnette (Seymour, Conn.) had a two hits for the winners.
Junior Jonathan Brooks (Stratford, Conn.) earned the win in relief for the Purple Knights pitching four innings of one-hit baseball.
Up next, the UB baseball team is scheduled to play a non-conference game at Post University on Tuesday afternoon.
