Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team took three of four games from the Queens (N.Y.) College Knights over the weekend, as the two teams wrapped up their East Coast Conference series with a Sunday doubleheader split in New York City, as the Purple Knights won a wild opener, 12-11, in 10 innings, and QC salvaged the split and the final game of the series with a 16-7 victory in game two. Bridgeport is now 11-31 overall and 8-12 in conference play. QC is now 13-25 overall and 3-17 in the ECC.
In the opener, junior Mark Hirschbeck (Trumbull, Conn.) who had three hits and two RBI, drove in the game-winning run with a two-out double in the top of tenth inning.
Also in game one, senior Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.) slugged two home runs and drove in four going 3-for-5 at the plate. Freshman Logan Allen (Magnolia, Tex.) had four hits and one RBI, and classmate Conall Roberts (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) drove in two and had two hits for the winners.
On the mound, sophomore Jonathan Brooks (Stratford, Conn.) picked up the win, as he was outstanding in relief pitching the final four innings allowing no runs on only one hit with five strikeouts and only one walk.
In game two, the Purple Knights got home runs from Hirschbeck and graduate student Tom Rinaldi (Waterbury, Conn.), and senior Mark Komaromi (Bridgeport, Conn.) drove in two runs.
With Sunday's split, Bridgeport heads into its final series of the 2018 regular season one game between the Mercy College Mavericks for the final spot in the 2018 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament. The Purple Knights and the Mavericks will face off against each other in the final four games of the regular season beginning with a single game on Thursday afternoon in Dobbs Ferry, New York. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
