Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team swept an East Coast Conference doubleheader form the visiting NYIT Bears on Sunday at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard, as the Purple Knights took game one, 9-3, and completed the sweep with an 11-6 victory in game two. UB is now 8-29 overall and 5-11 in the ECC. NYIT slips to 8-22-1 overall and 4-16 in conference play. Bridgeport took three of the four games in the weekend series between the two teams.
In game one, freshman Logan Allen (Magnolia, Texas) led a 12-hit Bridgeport offensive attack going 4-for-4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Graduate student Tom Rinaldi (Waterbury, Conn.) also drove in two runs for the winners in the opener.
Freshman Conall Roberts (Mt. Laurel. N.J.) had two hits and one run batted in, and junior Mark Hirschbeck (Trumbull, Conn.) also had a pair of base knocks for UB in game one.
On the mound in the opener, sophomore Matt Alicki (Milford, Conn.) worked seven strong innings to earn the win allowing only two earned runs on four hits, as he struck out seven.
In game two, the Purple Knights snapped a 3-3 tie with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on their way to the 11-6 victory, as Tom Rinaldi had four runs batted in to raise his team leading total to 34 on the season, and senior Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.) drove in two to help the UB cause.
Junior Eamon Catherina (Ridgefield, N.J.) picked up the win in the nightcap scattering 11 hits over six inning in which he allowed three runs while fanning four batters and allowing only two walks.
Up next, the UB baseball team is scheduled to host Adelphi University on Tuesday afternoon at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
