Pomona, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team lost two hard-fought road contests on Saturday against St. Thomas Aquinas College, as the host Spartans took game one of the doubleheader, 6-3, and completed the sweep with a nail-biting, 1-0 victory. UB is now 4-28 overall and 1-0 in East Coast Conference play. STAC is now 24-8 overall and 10-1 in the ECC.
In game one, junior Mark Hirschbeck (Trumbull, Conn.) went 2-for-3 and drove in a run for the Purple Knights.
In the nightcap, freshman Anthony Martino (West Sayville, N.Y.) was the hard luck loser working a complete game in which he allowed only two hits while striking out six and walking only one. One of those hits was a fourth inning solo home run by STAC's Anthony Shkreljia for the game's only run.
Bridgeport was limited to only one hit in game two, a fifth inning single by senior Mark Komaromi (Bridgeport, Conn.), and Mark Hirschbeck's bid to tie the game with a home run in the bottom of the seventh inning was brought back from going over the fence by outfielder Giovanni Dingcong to end the game.
The same two teams are scheduled to close out their four-game weekend series in Bridgeport at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Sunday. Game time is slated for 12 noon.
