St. Leo, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team held a 6-0 lead after the top of the first inning and led 11-9 heading to the bottom of the eighth, but the host St. Leo College Lions plated four in the eighth and then held off a UB rally in the top of the ninth inning to post a 13-12 slugfest win in Florida on Monday night. The Purple Knights slip to 1-11 overall, and the Lions raise their season record to 18-2, and St. Leo has won 14 in a row.
Senior Daren Grabowski (Berlin, Conn.) continued his torrid streak at the plate going 5-for-6 with two runs batted in and four runs scored. Grabowski led off the game with a mammoth home run, his fourth big fly of the early season.
Classmate Jose Negron (New Haven, Conn.) had three hits and drove in a pair, and graduate student Tom Rinaldi (Waterbury, Conn.) drove in three runs and had two hits for UB.
The same two teams will close out their four-game series in the Sunshine State on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m.
