Myrtle Beach, S.C.-The University of Bridgeport baseball went 1-1 on its next to last day on its season-opening road trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, as the Purple Knights topped Merrimack, 5-3, to open the day, and then fell against Stonehill, 5-2. UB is now 1-3 overall in the young 2018 season.
In the win over Merrimack, senior Daren Grabowski (Berlin, Conn.) had two hits, and classmates Jose Negron (New Haven, Conn.) and Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.) each had two runs batted in and junior Mark Hirschbeck (Trumbull, Conn.) knocked in a run.
On the mound, senior Andrew Oswald (St. James, N.Y.) picked up the win working six strong innings in which he allowed five hits, two runs (both earned) with eight strike outs and three walks. Sophomore Jason Burger (Orlando, Fla.) worked the final three innings to earn the save posting five strike outs.
Versus Stonehill, junior Aiden Burton (Milford, Conn.) had two hits and a run batted in.
The UB baseball team will wrap up play in South Carolina on Sunday at 12 noon with a single game versus Concordia (N.Y.) College.
