UB Baseball Pulls Out 10-9 Walk-Off Home Win Over Mercy
Team Right Back In Action At Home On Thursday Versus Queens (N.Y.) College
Bridgeport, Conn.-An RBI-groundout in the bottom of the ninth inning by junior Cam Overbaugh (Catskill, N.Y.) scored classmate Stephen DiNicola (Rochester, N.Y.), who led off the inning with a triple to right-centerfield, with the winning run, as the host University of Bridgeport baseball team walked off with a high-scoring, 10-9, East Coast Conference win over the visiting Mercy College Mavericks on Wednesday afternoon at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. With the victory, UB is now 17-21 overall and 11-10 in the ECC. Mercy falls to 10-28 overall and 4-17 in conference action.
The Purple Knights tied the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by graduate student Zach Burger (Orlando, Fla.), who had four runs batted in on the afternoon including a bases-clearing triple in the sixth inning.
Senior Dylan Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.) had three hits and scored two runs on the afternoon, as Bridgeport banged out 11 hits as a team in the win.
Senior Tyler Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.) had two hits and two runs batted in for the winners, and junior Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.) also contributed two hits for the Purple Knights and drove in one run.
Junior hurler Dennis Berardi (Brewster, N.Y.) picked up the win in relief to even his season record at 2-2. Berardi work two perfect innings in which he struck out all six batters he faced.
Up next, the UB baseball team will return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard tomorrow afternoon, when the Purple Knights host Queens (N.Y.) College in ECC action. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.
