Pomona, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team was swept in an East Coast Conference doubleheader on Sunday hosted by St. Thomas Aquinas College, as the Spartans won game one, 13-2, and came back to win game two which was scheduled for seven innings, 8-7, in nine innings. UB is now 15-19 overall and 9-8 in the ECC. STAC is now 16-12 overall and 10-4 in conference play.
In the opener, the host Spartans led 6-0 after two innings and 9-0 after four as they cruised to the win. Junior Tom Rinaldi (Waterbury, Conn.) had the lone RBI for the Purple Knights in game one, as UB scored both of its runs in inning number eight.
In game two, Bridgeport held a 7-4 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but the Spartans rallied with three runs to send the game into extra innings, and then won the contest on a two-out bases loaded single by Greg Dawber in the ninth.
Seven different players each had one RBI in game two for UB, and senior Dave Egeland (Toms River, N.J.) and junior Cam Overbaugh (Catskill, N.Y.), each had two hits in the nightcap for the Purple Knights.
The same two teams will close out their series tomorrow, Monday, April 24 in Bridgeport with a 12 noon single game at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
