Steigerwald's Two-RBI Single In The Eleventh Inning Helps Lift UB Baseball To 7-5 Road Win Over LIU Post
Purple Knights Now 9-5 In The ECC And 15-16 Overall
Brookville, N.Y.-A two-out, two-RBI single by senior Dylan Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.), his third hit of the afternoon, in the top of the eleventh inning helped lift the visiting University of Bridgeport baseball team to a 7-5 extra innings win over the host LIU Post Pioneers on Wednesday afternoon on Long Island. With the victory, the Purple Knights are now 15-16 overall and 9-5 in the East Coast Conference. LIUP is now 17-15 overall and 9-6 in the ECC.
Trailing 3-2 heading into the top of the eighth inning, Bridgeport took a 5-3 lead when senior Dave Egeland (Toms River, N.J.) crushed a three-run home run. Wednesday's homer is Egeland's first of 2017 and was his second hit of the day.
LIU Post tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings.
Senior Casey Ouellette (New Canaan, Conn.) also had two hits on Wednesday, as part of an 11-hit UB offensive attack, and senior Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) drove in two runs for the winners.
On the mound, junior Dennis Berardi (Brewster, N.Y.) picked up the victory to even his season mark at 1-1, as he worked three innings and was not charged with a run, allowing one hit with three strikeouts and two walks. Berardi came in to take over from starter, senior Denis Lyman (Kingston, N.Y.), who worked eight-plus inning, allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
Up next, the UB baseball team will take on St. Thomas Aquinas College in an East Coast Conference road contest at 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening.
