Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team was swept in a home, non-conference doubleheader by the visiting Franklin Pierce University Ravens on Monday afternoon at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard, as FPU won game one, 19-2, and held on for a wild, 11-10, victory in game two. With the two losses, the Purple Knights are now 14-16 overall. The Ravens are now 22-10 overall in 2017.
The day was highlighted by University of Bridgeport senior Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) getting a hit in each game to give him 184 for his UB career which is a new school record for career base hits surpassing John Ascenzia's career total of 183.
In game one, McCone and junior Mark Hirschbeck (Trumbull, Conn.), each had an RBI.
In game two, Bridgeport trailed 11-4 heading in the bottom of the seventh inning, and the Purple Knights fell just short of an improbable rally scoring six runs in the final half inning to fall by only one run.
Senior Dylan Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.) and graduate student Zach Burger (Orlando, Fla.), each had three hits and three runs batted in for UB in game two.
Senior Tyler Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.) also had three hits in the nightcap, and junior Stephen DiNicola (Rochester, N.Y.) had two hits, as part of the 15-hit attack by the Purple Knights in game two.
Up next, the UB baseball team returns to conference play on Wednesday afternoon, as the team travels to LIU Post.
