Late Rally Falls Just Short As Baseball Nipped At Southern New Hampshire, 3-2
Purple Knights Return To ECC Play At Home On Saturday Versus St. Thomas Aquinas
Manchester, N.H.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team travelled to Manchester, New Hampshire on Thursday afternoon to face regional power Southern New Hampshire University, and the visiting Purple Knights gave the host Penmen all they could handle in 3-2 defeat for UB. Bridgeport is now 13-14 overall, and SNHU ups its overall season record to 23-6.
Trailing 1-0, the Purple Knights tied the game on an RBi double by junior Cam Overbaugh (Catskill, N.Y.), who had two hits on the day.
The game stayed deadlocked at 1-1 until the bottom of the eighth inning the Penmen scored two runs on an infield single, two walks, a sacrifice fly and a double steal that included home.
UB tried to come back in the top the ninth inning when the first two men reached base, but graduate student Zac Burger (Orland, Fla.) then lined into a double play before senior Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) cut the SNHU lead to 3-2 with a run scoring double. Unfortunately for UB fans that would be the final score of the game, as McCone was stranded at second.
Thursday's base hit gives McCone 181 for his career at Bridgeport which is only three shy of setting a new school record for career hits.
Southern New Hampshire could only muster three hits on the afternoon, but the Penmen benefited from seven walks on the day.
Up next, the UB baseball team will look to get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon when the Purple Knights return to East Coast Conference play when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
