Brookville, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team split an East Coast Conference doubleheader at LIU Post on Saturday afternoon, as the Purple Knights banged out 14 hits as they won game one, 12-3, and UB fell in a pitchers' duel, 2-1, in game two. With the split, Bridgeport is now 11-12 overall and 6-4 in the ECC. LIU Post moves to 13-12 overall and 5-3 in conference play,
In the opener, junior Stephen DiNicola (Rochester, N.Y.) had three hits and drove in three runs. Senior Dylan Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.) also had three hits for the Purple Knights and drove in one.
Junior Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.) had two hits and three RBI for the game one winners, and seniors Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) and Dave Egeland (Toms River, N.J.) also had a pair of hits for UB with Egeland driving in run.
Senior, starter Anthony Alicki (Milford, Conn.) picked up the win in game one to raise his season record to 2-1, as he pitched seven innings in which he allowed only six hits and three runs, as he fanned seven and issued three bases on balls.
In game two, the Purple Knights were limited to only two hits over the seven innings of action. Stephen DiNicola drove in UB's only run of the game with a hit in the seventh inning, and junior Cam Overbaugh (Catskill, N.Y.) has UB's other base knock in the nightcap to lead off the game.
Senior Denis Lyman (Kingston, N.Y.) was the tough luck loser for Bridgeport in game two, as he fired a complete game in which he only allowed six hits and one earned run. Denis struck out six without issuing a walk on the afternoon.
The same two teams will continue their four-game conference series in Bridgeport on Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
