Burger's Big Flys Help UB Baseball To 10-6 ECC Win Over Molloy
Purple Knights Have Now Scored Double-Digit Runs In Seven Outings So Far In 2017
Uniondale, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team broke out the big bats on Sunday to get back in the win column with a 10-6 East Coast Conference win over the Molloy College Lions. Sunday marked the seventh time so far in 2017 that the Purple Knights have reached double digits in runs scored in a single game. With the win, UB is now 9-11 overall and 4-3 in the ECC. Molloy is now 8-15 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
Graduate student Zach Burger (Orlando, Fla.) did plenty of damage at the plate for Bridgeport on Sunday, as he went 3-for-5 with two home runs (a solo shot in the fifth and a three-run blast in the sixth) and five runs batted plus two runs scored. Burger now has four long balls on the year.
Juniors Tyler Theiss (Deer Park, N.Y.) and Stephen DiNicola (Rochester, N.Y.) each had two hits for the winners on Sunday, and classmate Daren Grabowski (Berlin, Conn.) drove in a pair of runs.
On the mounds, senior, starter Matt Van Riper (Elmwood Park, N.J.) worked the first five innings to earn his second win of the season, juniors Dennis Berardi (Brewster. N.Y.) and Andrew Oswald (St. James, N.Y.) combined to work the final four innings, three by Berardi, to preserve the win.
The same two teams will close out their four-game conference series on Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. That game will again be hosted by Molloy with UB playing as the home team.
