West Haven, Conn.-The host University of New Haven Chargers scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 10-9 lead which proved to be the final score in the game, as UNH prevailed over the visiting University of Bridgeport Purple Knights in a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon. UB had taken a 9-8 lead in the top of the eight by scoring three runs capped off by a two-RBI double by graduate student Zach Burger (Orlando, Fla.). Bridgeport is now 8-9 overall, and New Haven ups its season mark to 8-3.
Five different UB players had two hits apiece on Thursday, as the Purple Knights amassed 12 hits as a group.
Seniors Dylan Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y,), Tyler Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.), Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) and Dave Egeland (Toms River, N.J.) plus junior Stephen DiNicola (Rochester, N.Y.), each had two hits on the afternoon, and Egeland added two RBI.
Up next, the UB baseball team is slated to open a weekend East Coast Conference series at 3:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon at Molloy College with the Purple Knights playing as the home team.
