Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team open its 2017 East Coast Conference schedule in fine style on Friday afternoon with a road doubleheader sweep over the host mercy College Mavericks. The Purple Knights won game one, 7-3, and completed the sweep with a 4-1 victory in game two. UB is now an even 7-7 overall and 2-0 in conference action. Mercy slips to 5-11 overall and 0-2 in the ECC.
In the opener, the Purple Knights snapped a 3-3 tie with two runs in the sixth inning and added a pair of insurance tallies in the ninth.
As a team in game one, Bridgeport clubbed 16 hits led by junior Cam Overbaugh (Catskill, N.Y.), who went 4-for-6 with two RBI.
Graduate student Chris Triano (Greenwich, Conn.) had three hits in the opener, and he blasted his third home run of the season to tie the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning.
Three Purple Knights, senior Dave Egeland (Toms River, N.J.) and juniors Stephen DiNicola (Rochester, N.Y.) and Daren Grabowski (Berlin, Conn.), each had two hit for the winners in game one.
On the mound in game one, starter Anthony Alicki (Sr., Milford, Conn.) picked up his first win of the season (1-0), as he worked six inning in which he fanned 10 batters. Junior Andrew Oswald (St. James, N.Y.) allowed no runs and only two hits over the final three innings to earn his second save of 2017.
In the nightcap, senior, hurler Denis Lyman (Kingston, N.Y.) raised his season record to 4-1 with an outstanding, seven-inning complete game performance in which he allowed an unearned run on only five hits and two walks with nine strikeouts.
The Bridgeport offense gave Lyman all the runs he needed on Friday on a two-RBI single by senior Casey Ouellette (New Canaan, Conn.) in the second inning and another two-run single by classmate Dylan Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.) in the seventh inning.
The same two teams will continue their four-game weekend series at Mercy with a single game on Saturday that will begin at 3:00 p.m.
