Tampa, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team snapped a seven-game losing streak and got back in the win column with a doubleheader sweep over the Bentley University Falcons on Saturday afternoon in game played at the University of Tampa, as UB won game one, 5-3, and completed the sweep with a 3-2 victory in the nightcap. With the two wins, Bridgeport is now 4-7 overall. Bentley slip to 2-12 on the season.
In game one, the Purple Knights, who trailed 2-1 heading into the top of seventh, plated three runs to take a 4-2 lead which they never relinquished.
Graduate student Chris Triano (Greenwich, Conn.) homered in the eighth inning of game one, and senior Casey Ouellette (New Canaan, Conn.) and junior Stephen DiNicola (Rochester, N.Y.), each had two hits for the winners.
In the nightcap, UB tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the eighth when a run scored on a wild pitch, and the pushed across the winning run in the top of ninth when senior Tyler Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.) tripled and classmate Dylan Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.) brought him home with an RBI single.
Graduate student Zach Burger (Orlando, Fla.) had three hits for the winners in game two.
On the mound for the Purple Knights, junior Andrew Oswald (St. James, N.Y.) earned the save in game one in relief of starter and winner Denis Lyman (Sr., Kingston, N.Y.), and Oswald pitched three innings in relief in game two to earn the win, after starter senior Anthony Alicki (Milford, Conn.) had 15 strikeouts in six innings..
Up next, the UB baseball will wrap up its 2017 Spring Trip to Florida and complete a four-game series with Bentley with a single game that will begin at the University of Tampa at 12 noon.
