St. Leo, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team dropped its second straight slugfest in Florida on Monday, as the Purple Knights fell at St. Leo University, 18-17 in 10 innings. On Sunday, Bridgeport lost at Tampa, 17-10. UB is now 2-4 overall, and St. Leo ups its season mark to 11-9.
As a team, the Purple Knights banged out a total of 22 hits, as they came back to score two runs in the eight and six run in the ninth to send the game into extra innings at 17-17.
Seniors Dave Egeland (Toms River, N.J.) had four hits for Bridgeport including a two-run single that tied the game at 17-17 in the top of the ninth, as his team railed for six runs. Junior Stephen DiNicola (Rochester, N.Y.) also had four hits, and seniors Dylan Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.) plus Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) each had three hits on the day.
Egeland drove in six runs for the Purple Knights plus Steigerwald added three RBI, and DeNicola had two runs batted in, plus he hit his first home run of the season.
UB junior Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.) also knocked in a pair of runs on the day.
Up next, the Purple Knights open a two-game series at Eckerd College on Tuesday evening.
